Camels Swallowed, Forest Still Missing and Presumed Lost

I have posted twice on the Liberty University / Ergun Caner controversy. If you are interested enough to be here now and are unfamiliar with my previous posts, you can find them here and here . Yesterday, Liberty University released a statement regarding the investigation into the veracity of some of Dr. Caner's claims regarding his testimony and accomplishments. You can read that here and here . There are several places you can read about this. If you are ignorant of the whole thing, consider it a blessing and decide if you really want to know. First of all, for all the Christians who have insisted that Dr. James White had speculated about or that this scandal was in any way about whether or not Dr. Caner was ever really a Muslim, I am at a loss for words. Actually that is a fib. I am at a loss for kind words. I cannot conceive that you can be intelligent enough to have blogs but not intelligent enough to read clearly. Not just that but the man (Dr. White) has gone o...

"Did God Really Say....."

Embellishment. It is in the top three things that set mankind on its backside on the outside of the Garden. My old cowboy friend always told me that before a horse does something, it gets ready to do something. Things line up and then the horse bucks or kicks. Before Adam and Eve fell, things lined up. It took one question put together by the best wordsmith the world has ever known. It probably happened something like this: "Did God really say.... ?" Adam, who was given instructions directly, let the first bit line up when he relaxed his place of leadership and let Eve answer the question or rather let her answer it incorrectly. Eve embellished the answer. She told the serpent not only can't they eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they can't even touch it! That's the next bit that lined up. I think it's important because it is a twisting of what is true and it sounds so dramatic. It sounds as if Eve is an authority on the subject....

Gnats, Camels, Forest,Trees- Praying for Liberty University

There are many posts and many opinions on the net regarding Dr. Ergun Caner and the veracity of his testimony and curriculum vitae . I have written an open letter to Dr. Caner here on my blog. I am of little consequence and my blog is not one that is well read. That seldom stops me from speaking my mind here in my blog and it is not going to stop me today. Having worked in Student Development in a Christian University, I am passionate about education. In my office I had 1 Timothy 1:5 posted on my wall to remind me of my purpose. "But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith." The point of being educated is to be able to discern right from wrong; truth from error. For believers a good conscience is not only one that is clean but one that does its job; keeping us from sin and when we do sin-leading us to repentance. Truth and repentance are necessary components of sound faith. The point of being an educator is deve...

The Trouble With Embellishing History

The truth about things is always out there to be found. My friend, Turretinfan , posted an excellent series written by Tom Chantry about the importance of truth in reporting history. I hope you'll read his work whether or not you are familiar with the Ergun Caner debacle. It is a valuable lesson for us all. I recommend you put both these blogs on your reading radar.

Open Letter to Ergun Caner

I don't know that you will read this because my blog is not well known and in the larger scheme of things I am of little consequence. I know you are a busy man and honestly, given the last few weeks I imagine you might be tired of people's opinions. Knowing this, however, I hope that you will take a moment to read it or that someone who knows you will kindly bring it to your attention. I want to thank you for your post dated 2/25/2010 . I know that it is not easy to be criticized, confronted and talked about. I talked about you here on my blog and if you care to read what I said you will note that I was praying for you. That was sincere. I also know that it may seem to you that those of us who are reformed in our theology just want to make your life miserable because you are not reformed. That may be true for some, but I assure you that is not the case for me nor is it the case for those with whom I associate. Speaking for myself, my intentions are honorable toward y...

The Importance of Words

I am always amazed by how little attention most people pay to words, especially the words they use. Words have meaning; they are the symbols or maps we use to communicate. While the map is not the territory, it's crucial that the map accurately reflect the territory it represents. Perhaps I care about this because of my personal experiences with words used carelessly and inaccurately. When you've been a liar and know the treachery of the lies you've told and when you've been on the receiving end of lies, white or Technicolor, you know their ability to gut you. If you've been on the receiving end of a rebuke, one that's hit the truth of your lie on the head and exposed your guilt, it brings with it the sort of shame you can only do one of three things with; repent, attack the one who has exposed you, or retreat like a coward and never deal with the issue in the light. I have spent the last couple of hours listening and reading through thoughts and opinions abo...
